THE PROJECT
Don't Ignore the Horrors™ is an ongoing art project confronting the cruelty we create but refuse to face. In order to preserve authority, comfort, moral certainty and a sense of belonging we continue to normalize and even sanctify the suffering of others. This project is a critique of moral surrender, examining our capacity to recast cruelty as goodness by placing moral authority above ourselves and evil outside ourselves. Racism, misogyny, homophobia, persecution, war, indoctrination, and judgment are perpetuated through this surrender.
This is an ongoing project spanning multiple mediums, scales and spaces. With a Public Study, brass plaques are being installed across cultural hubs as a quiet warning, reminding viewers not to grow comfortable with cruelty. Los Angeles and Charlotte are first with New York City, Miami, Nashville, Edinburgh, Quito and Buenos Aires to follow. The Public Study introduces a warning to the world while the full-scale installation will turn that warning into an environment inside a New York City gallery.
Blood is the dominant visual language of the installation, falling from above and down the walls to evoke a sense of dread. Suspended and wall-mounted metal forms carry the imagery through the space. Across multiple connected works, symbolic figures of sanctity appear as embodiments of the horrors, scattered and concealed for the viewer to discover and interpret. Through perspective, concealment, aperture and reflection the work moves viewers from passive observation to recognition, then proximity and finally confrontation.
In the end you are left to consider your own relationship to cruelty.
